North County’s Premier A Cappella Chorus

Are you a guy who likes to sing?

THE MUSIC MEN CHORUS is the premiere men’s a cappella singing group in North San Diego County. We have a great time performing in North County communities and surrounding areas. We specialize in close harmony, singing in a variety of styles, including adult contemporary, pop, barbershop, gospel and traditional choral.

We’re always looking for singers; membership in THE MUSIC MEN CHORUS is open to male singers of all ages. We would be delighted to have you come by any Tuesday evening at 7:00PM at the San Marcos Senior Center, at Richmar and Twin Oaks Valley Road. Join us in the truly enriching musical experience of blending your voice with the mellow sound of well-tuned a cappella harmony.

How does a person join the chorus?

First, some important background information: THE MUSIC MEN CHORUS is the performing ensemble of the Palomar Pacific chapter, an affiliate of the Barbershop Harmony Society and you will be joining as a member of the chapter. We ask that you attend three regular rehearsals before presenting your chapter membership application.

Once a chapter member, you are encouraged to become a member of THE MUSIC MEN, our performing group. This is done by demonstrating that you know the music, words, interpretation and any choreography that is included in our performance repertoire. Sheet music, learning tracks, weekly rehearsals, music craft sessions and section breakouts will assist you in reaching that goal. Barbershop singing aims for excellence in vocal quality and visual conformance to the message of the song.

What do THE MUSIC MEN do?

We enrich lives (ours and others) through singing. We’re often invited to sing at community and civic events and to participate in performance series in a variety of area venues and retirement communities. Our chorus and quartets perform at various venues throughout the years. The highlight of the year is our Annual Spring Show, which typically includes our chorus and quartets, a prize-winning quartet from outside our area, and a guest chorale or other group.  Traditionally, our quartets deliver Singing Valentines to individuals throughout North County, and often, our chapter presents several Christmas shows.

What do we get out of it?

It’s really true…….we love to sing, but aside from the joy of singing we get the opportunity to express ourselves in the fellowship of other men who feel as we do about music and the chance to contribute to the community. We’re often given opportunities to respond to a variety of  requests in settings that range from a schoolroom, workplace, a hospice, the home of a military wife and children, and sometimes our message even includes a marriage proposal.

What about singing in quartets?

Many of our chorus members sing in quartets. Not all members are comfortable in quartets, however, so they sing only with the chorus. We encourage quartet participation, but choosing to be in one is entirely optional and a personal decision.

What can you expect at your first meeting?

You will be greeted by our Membership Chairman. He will introduce you to a “buddy” who will see that you get a guest book of music so that you’ll be able to participate in the rehearsal. You’ll be given a brief orientation about what to expect that evening, and he will be there to answer your questions and provide guidance. On any given rehearsal night, the chorus may be learning new songs for next year’s show or reviewing current repertoire for an upcoming event.

How much does it cost to be a member?

Our annual dues provide members the use of uniforms, a meeting place, qualified directors, learning material, music craft sessions, Society and District publications, and many other benefits. There are special rates and payment plans to make it affordable.

You are cordially invited to come sing with us.
